As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven. Nehemiah (1:4 ESV)
Nehemiah hears of Jerusalem’s destruction. He knew the reason why. It was God’s chastening hand. This sight moved him to the point of prayerful tears. Nehemiah grieved for the very same thing that grieved God. In response, he turned his face to God. He addressed the problem and situation to God. Amazingly the answer to Nehemiah’s prayer was Nehemiah himself. He would be the rebuilder of the walls of Jerusalem.
Nehemiah serves as an example as to what ought to grieve me, move me to tears, make me abstain from food and seek God. Nehemiah’s values and priorities were the same as God’s. What moved and grieved God, moved and grieved Nehemiah.
